At Home for Fall
Simple shifts in color, texture and scent that make home feel warmer for the season.
I don't completely redecorate my home with the seasons. But fall is one of those times when a few small changes can completely alter the way a room feels.
Warmer color, softer textures, candlelight and the right scent are often all it takes.
Bring in Autumn Color
Fresh flowers are one of the easiest ways to shift a room with the season.
I gravitate toward deeper shades—burgundy, burnt orange, deep pink and yellow—and flowers such as chrysanthemums and sunflowers.
Add Warmth With Candlelight
Before it's cold enough for a fire, I love filling the fireplace with candles in varying heights.
The flickering light gives the room warmth without adding anything permanent—and looks particularly beautiful as the evenings get darker.
Change the Scent
Scent may be the most subtle way to signal a new season.
For fall, I prefer fragrances with notes of wood, leather, vanilla, bourbon and smoke—something warm and atmospheric rather than overtly seasonal.
Layer in Texture
Rather than changing furniture or decor, I swap a few pillows and throws.
Velvet, cashmere, tweed and leather immediately make a room feel richer and more inviting.
Start at the Front Door
A few pumpkins, potted mums or a beautiful autumnal wreath are enough to acknowledge the season outside.
I'd keep this edited. A little fall goes a long way.
MBellished Tips
Work with what you already have. Seasonal decorating shouldn't require reinventing a room.
Think beyond color. Texture, fragrance and lighting can change the mood just as effectively.
Keep it natural. Flowers, branches, pumpkins and foliage tend to feel more sophisticated than overtly themed decor.
Edit. A few well-chosen seasonal touches are usually more effective than filling every surface.
