Disneyland, The MBellished Way
Disneyland LA
My survival guide to the happiest place on earth—with a few strategic splurges and considerably less stress.
I'll admit it: Disneyland has never been my idea of a relaxing vacation.
But when my children were 9 and 4, we tackled it during Spring Break—and I quickly learned that how you do Disney makes all the difference.
I'm not going to tell you how to squeeze 17 rides into a day. My strategy is much simpler:
Stay somewhere fabulous. Arrive early. Pay for convenience. Take a break. Eat well. And don't try to do everything.
Stay Somewhere Fabulous
We stayed at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and for me, the location is worth the splurge.
Being able to escape the parks for a few hours completely changes the experience.
My ideal Disney day:
Park early → lunch → hotel & pool → shower → back for dinner and Disneyland after dark.
Twelve consecutive hours in a theme park? Absolutely not.
Pay for Convenience
Disneyland is already an investment. This isn't where I want to spend half the day standing in line.
During busy periods, I'd pay for Lightning Lane access and choose the attractions that really matter to us.
My rule: pick three priorities.
Everything else is a bonus.
And if this were a milestone family trip and I really wanted to splurge? I'd consider a Disneyland VIP Tour.
I'd rather spend money making the experience easier than come home with another bag of souvenirs.
Take the Afternoon Off
This may be my best Disneyland advice.
By mid-afternoon, the parks are busy, everyone is tired and the magic can begin wearing a little thin.
Leave.
Swim. Nap. Have a glass of wine. Then return when it's cooler, the lights are coming on and everyone feels human again.
Disneyland after dark is my favorite Disneyland anyway.
Eat Well
I like having one proper meal planned each day.
If you're staying at the Grand Californian, Napa Rose is the obvious grown-up choice. It reopened in 2026 after a major redesign and is exactly the kind of respite I appreciate after several hours in the parks.
And one observation from my original post absolutely deserves to remain:
California Adventure serves alcohol.
This was apparently thrilling news to me while navigating Spring Break with a 9-year-old and a 4-year-old.
I stand by it.
Don't Be Too Sophisticated
You're still at Disneyland.
Buy the ears. Have the Mickey-shaped treat. Take the family photograph. Stay for one nighttime spectacular.
We loved World of Color, and those are the moments I remember far more than how many rides we managed.
Do one or two things that feel completely, unapologetically Disney.
Then call it a night before everyone melts down.

Comfort over conquest.
Disney regularly updates its ticketing, reservation, and Lightning Lane systems, so check the current details before your trip rather than building your vacation around advice from an old blog post.
