A Bollywood-Inspired Celebration
Color, music, flowers and a little glamour—my formula for bringing the energy of Bollywood to a party.
I’ve always thought Bollywood makes a fabulous starting point for a party.
It’s colorful, glamorous, exuberant and, most importantly, fun. Years ago, I co-hosted both an adult Bollywood evening and a Bollywood party for children, and while the two celebrations were very different, I found myself using much the same formula for both.
The secret wasn't trying to recreate a movie set. It was choosing a few elements—color, flowers, music and beautiful Indian details—and really having fun with them.
Start With Color
This is not the party for a restrained palette.
I love fuchsia, orange, saffron yellow, lime, turquoise and purple, mixed with touches of gold. Bright linens are an easy place to begin, particularly when layered with colorful flowers and candlelight.
The colors don't need to match perfectly. In fact, I think it looks better when they don't.
Layer in Indian Details
A few well-chosen details can establish the mood without making the party feel overly themed.
Lanterns, colorful textiles, marigolds or other abundant flowers, Indian trays and bowls, and perhaps a few vintage Bollywood posters can completely transform a space.
I'd rather have five beautiful details than fifty decorations.
Let the Food Be Part of the Party
For an evening party, I love the idea of food that encourages people to mingle—chaat, samosas, kebabs and small bites followed by a beautiful Indian dinner or buffet.
And if there's a celebration involved, the cake can be part of the décor. The henna-inspired cakes and cupcakes we used were such a fun detail.
Music Changes Everything
For a Bollywood party, the playlist matters almost as much as the décor.
Start with music people can talk over and let the energy build as the evening progresses. And eventually, you want people dancing.
For our parties, we also played Bollywood films and dance sequences on screens without sound, which added movement and color to the room without competing with the music.
Give Guests Something to Play With
One of my favorite details was giving guests hip scarves. They doubled as party favors and immediately encouraged everyone to get into the spirit of the evening.
Bangles can be fun too, particularly when they're presented beautifully rather than simply handed out.
The MBellished Touch
A great themed party is about creating a world for your guests to step into.
With Bollywood, that means embracing the color, glamour, music, food and energy—and carrying those elements through the evening in a way that feels cohesive.
Because the best parties don't just look good. They make people want to join in.
That feels much more true to what this post is actually about.
MBellished Entertaining Notes
Go bold with color. This isn't the occasion for beige.
Use flowers generously. They bring color and abundance without feeling like party-store décor.
Edit the theme. A few Indian details will have more impact than covering every surface.
Get the music right. The party should become more energetic as the evening goes on.
Give people a reason to participate. Dancing, scarves or bangles immediately loosen things up.
