Life Lessons from the Mah Jongg Table

On strategy, letting go, and the joy of bringing people together.

I've recently become a little obsessed with Mah Jongg.

I love the beautiful tiles, the satisfying clatter as they're shuffled, the strategy and, of course, the thrill of calling “Mah Jongg!”

But what I love most is what happens around the table.

I've always enjoyed bringing people together, and Mah Jongg has become another wonderful way to do that. I play Bridge too, but while I love its intellectual challenge, it can be harder to build an inclusive community around. Mah Jongg feels more socially approachable. A little competition, plenty of laughter, and a reason to gather.

And the more I play, the more I realize how much this game resembles life.

Play the Hand You're Dealt

Sometimes the tiles fall beautifully into place. Other times, you're left wondering what on earth you're going to do with them.

Life doesn't always give us the circumstances we'd choose. But a seemingly hopeless hand can turn around with one unexpected tile.

It's not always about what you're dealt. It's what you do with it.

Know When to Pivot

One of the hardest things about Mah Jongg is abandoning a hand you've become attached to.

You have a plan. You're committed. But the tiles simply aren't cooperating.

Sound familiar?

Sometimes the smartest move is to change direction. In Mah Jongg, as in life, there's a fine line between perseverance and stubbornness.

Patience Is a Virtue

You can be one tile away from winning and wait endlessly for it to appear.

No amount of wishing will make it happen.

Mah Jongg reminds me that we can plan, prepare and make all the right moves, but we can't control every outcome.

Sometimes we simply have to trust the process.

There's Always Another Hand

A bad discard. A missed opportunity. Someone else calling the tile you desperately needed.

We've all been there.

But what I love about Mah Jongg is that every round offers a fresh start. You shuffle the tiles, build the walls and begin again.

A little reminder not to let one disappointment define the whole experience.

The Real Win Is Around the Table

For me, this is the biggest lesson.

Community doesn't always require elaborate plans or grand gestures. Sometimes all it takes is a shared interest and a reason to show up.

Mah Jongg brings people together across ages, backgrounds and experience levels. Friendships form, stories are shared and, for a couple of hours, we're simply enjoying each other's company.

The stakes are low, but the rewards can be surprisingly meaningful.

And perhaps that's why I love it so much.

Because in Mah Jongg, as in life, it's not just about winning. It's about how you play, what you learn and who you share the table with.

MBellished Tip

Want to build community? Start with something simple. A game, a book club, a walking group—anything that gives people a reason to gather regularly.

Sometimes the best connections begin with just showing up.
