Transforming a sporty childhood bedroom into a feminine, sophisticated retreat with a touch of Victorian romance.
There comes a time when a childhood bedroom simply doesn't reflect who you are anymore.
When a client asked me to help her daughter make that transition, I was honored and excited. Her daughter’s room had always been sporty, casual, and full of personality, but as she grew older, her tastes began to change. She wanted something softer, more feminine, and a little more glamorous.
She had a clear vision: vintage charm, luxurious details, and plenty of romance. She chose the color palette and overall aesthetic, and my role was to bring those ideas to life.
What followed was a wonderful exercise in balancing old-world elegance with youthful spirit.
Design Story & Inspiration
From Inspiration to Interpretation
Her inspiration images were straight out of a romantic Victorian fantasy—sweeping drapery, ornate furniture, soft greens, gilded details, and rooms filled with character.
I loved the direction, but recreating those elaborate interiors wasn't the goal. I wanted to capture their essence while creating a bedroom that felt fresh, comfortable, and appropriate for a young woman.
For me, that's the beauty of design inspiration. It's not about copying a photograph. It's about understanding what draws someone to it and finding a way to make that feeling their own.
A Little Architectural Magic
The biggest transformation began with the walls.
We traded the original bright blue for a muted sage green and introduced classic picture-frame molding with warm metallic accents. Almost immediately, the room took on a completely different personality.
I've always loved how architectural detailing can elevate a space. The molding brought a sense of history and sophistication, while the restrained color palette kept everything feeling calm and contemporary.
The softly curved upholstered headboard, rounded nightstands, and warm bedside lighting continued that balance between traditional and modern.

The Romance Is in the Details
Inspired by the grandeur of Victorian interiors, we introduced sweeping swagged drapery with tassel detailing, layered over a tailored Roman shade. It was a bold choice, but one that gave the room exactly the romantic character she had envisioned.
To balance that drama, we kept the bedding soft and inviting. Delicate floral embroidery, ruffled edges and layers of blush, cream, and sage added femininity without making the room feel overly precious.
And then came the finishing touches—ornate gold frames, decorative bows and vintage-inspired accessories that brought a little whimsy to the space.
It's often these smaller details that make a room feel truly personal.

A Room for Her Next Chapter
What I love most about this transformation is how completely the room's personality changed without losing its youthful energy.
The original bedroom reflected a younger girl and her interests. The new space celebrates her evolving taste—romantic, sophisticated, and a little glamorous.
And while the aesthetic draws heavily from the past, the room feels very much of the present.
That's the balance I was hoping to achieve: old-world charm with a young spirit.
More than anything, I wanted her to walk into her room and feel that it was entirely her own.
And isn't that what good design is really about?
MBellished Tip
Borrow the feeling, not the entire look.
When you're inspired by a particular design period, choose a few defining elements rather than trying to recreate everything. Architectural molding, statement drapery or vintage-inspired accessories can introduce old-world character without making a room feel dated.
The magic is in the mix.
