The Art of Poolside Glamour

My formula for bringing a little glamour to days by the pool.

I’ve never been a throw-on-a-swimsuit-and-go kind of person. I like a little glamour by the pool.

A fabulous swimsuit, a beautiful caftan, oversized sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, gold jewelry and a great tote are all part of the pleasure for me.

Poolside style can be relaxed without being entirely casual. The trick is choosing a few pieces that make you feel fabulous—and then knowing when to stop.

Start With the Swimsuit

Fit comes first.

I would rather have one or two swimsuits that I feel wonderful in than a suitcase filled with options. I tend to look for silhouettes that flatter, offer enough support and make me feel comfortable enough that I'm not constantly adjusting them.

The Cover-Up Makes the Look

This may be my favorite part.

A beautiful caftan, pareo or flowing dress can take you from the pool to lunch without feeling as though you've simply thrown something over a swimsuit.

It's also where I’m most likely to introduce color, print or embellishment.

Add the Accessories

Oversized sunglasses. A wide-brimmed hat. A beautiful beach tote.

These are practical pieces, but they're also what make a simple swimsuit feel like a complete look.

And while I don't need much jewelry by the pool, I still like a little gold—hoops, studs or a few delicate bangles are usually enough.

Keep Everything Else Simple

Poolside isn't the place for complicated hair or makeup.

Hair pulled back, sun protection, lip color, and perhaps waterproof mascara are plenty.

The goal is to look polished without appearing as though you've tried too hard.
