The Hand Chair
Part furniture, part sculpture—and just eccentric enough to make a room interesting.
Every once in a while, I come across a piece of furniture that makes me stop and look twice.
The Hand Chair is definitely one of those pieces.
Originally created by Mexican artist Pedro Friedeberg, the chair is exactly what its name suggests: a beautifully sculpted hand large enough to sit in.
It's playful, slightly surreal, and certainly not the kind of furniture that quietly disappears into a room.
And that's precisely why I love it.
Furniture as Art
I've always believed that the most interesting rooms need something unexpected.
Not everything has to be practical. Not everything has to match. And not every chair needs to look like…a chair.
A sculptural piece like this can completely change the personality of a room. Put it in an otherwise restrained space and suddenly you have a conversation piece.
One Is Enough
The trick with something this eccentric is restraint.
I wouldn't build an entire room around unusual furniture. I'd let one extraordinary piece do the talking and keep its surroundings relatively simple.
That's often what makes an unusual object feel sophisticated rather than gimmicky.
Why I Love It
It's art you can sit on.
It's beautifully made.
It has a sense of humor.
And decades after it was first designed, it still makes you stop and look.
That's my kind of furniture.
Below are some of my favorite examples of the hand chair, it can fit into any style (modern or traditional), any room (bathroom or formal living room) and in any space (large or small). Take a look…..
