The Transformative Power of a Scarf

Around my neck, in my hair, or even at my waist—a beautiful scarf has always been one of my favorite ways to change an outfit.

I have always loved scarves.

There are very few accessories that can completely transform what you're wearing with so little effort. A beautiful scarf can add color to something simple, make an old outfit feel new again, or simply provide that finishing touch that was missing.

I've worn them around my neck for years. I love them tied over my hair, particularly when I'm traveling. And lately, I've started wearing them around my waist, a small change that has made me look at my collection in an entirely new way.

How I Wear Them

I'm not particularly interested in complicated scarf-tying techniques. For me, it should feel effortless.

Around my neck, I might loosely knot one over a simple sweater or shirt. On my head, I love the slightly glamorous, old-world feeling of a silk scarf with sunglasses. And around the waist, a scarf brings color and softness to a dress, trousers or even denim.

It's less about following a formula and more about playing with it.

The Ones I Indulge In

My absolute indulgence is a Hermès cashmere scarf. They're extraordinary—the softness, the color, the workmanship—and they're pieces I keep rather than something I buy for a season.

I've also loved Dior's silk-and-cashmere scarves, which have that same wonderful combination of luxury and wearability.

For me, these aren't impulse purchases. They're pieces I buy occasionally, take care of and expect to have for years.

A Few I Always Come Back To

Beyond Hermès and Dior, there are certain designers whose scarves always catch my eye. Burberry for its unmistakable checks, Gucci for pieces that can be playful or glamorous, and Pucci for that incredible use of color and pattern.

But I'm just as likely to fall in love with a scarf that has no recognizable designer name at all. For me, it's always about the color, pattern, fabric and how it makes me feel when I put it on.

A Connection to India

Perhaps part of my love of scarves comes from growing up in India, where beautiful textiles are everywhere.

Scarves, shawls and stoles are part of the visual language—silks, cashmeres, embroideries, block prints, woven patterns and incredible color. Some are incredibly fine and luxurious; others are simple pieces found while traveling or shopping in a local market.

I love that a textile can tell you something about where it came from and how it was made.

And some of the scarves I treasure most aren't necessarily the most expensive ones. They're the ones that remind me of a place, a trip or a moment.

More Than an Accessory

That's probably why I've never thought of scarves simply as another fashion accessory.

They're incredibly practical, but they're also expressive. I can wear essentially the same outfit and change its entire personality simply by changing the scarf.

And unlike so many things in fashion, a beautiful scarf doesn't really become obsolete.

You simply find a new way to wear it.
